Mark asks…

How do I go about getting my house solar powered?

I live in South Texas and am ready to build a house. I’m very interested in making my home solar powered. Where do I start?

Henry Dover answers:

Corpus christi?
Check online from google about buying some solar panels.
You would do well to check out wind power instead though. Corpus is rated an 8 on a scale of 1-10 as most windiest (sp?) areas in the US.
On average, a wind generator, tower and all is about 15k, provides enough power for 2 homes. So you can split it with a neighbor, in 3 years you pay off the wind power generator and never pay elect. Again, plus CPL or whoever it is now, has to buy the surplus energy from you.
Profits.

Donna asks…

how many solar panels will it take to power a 1000 sq ft home in austin tx?

im building a home and am interested in solar energy, since sun light isnt a problem in texas. any ideas out there?

Henry Dover answers:

First orient the roof so it faces south…second use shingle composite roofing solar panel don’t go over tile roofs….3rd contact all of the solar panel installation companies in the yellow pages or on the Internet…get written estimates and guarantees…also check with the local power company there are federal tax credits available and even possibly state or local ones as well…some require that you file paperwork before starting work……Talked with a neighbor that recovered 1/2 the cost of his system the very first year…but lamented putting in a smaller system than he should have…he gets paid for power generated that he doesn’t use….

..he says the most important thing is keeping the panels clean they generate much better when they are clean…

Jenny asks…

Is there a Solar Panels 101 course or book?

I am investigating using solar panels to provide some power at home, in Corpus Christi, Texas but there is little practical information available. Is there a book, course or, better still, someone in the area that has first hand information?

Henry Dover answers:

A good place to start is the Department of Energy’s EERE website.
They have short basic guides on all types of energy projects for the home including small solar installations.

Joseph asks…

This might be a dumb question but are there solar panels in places like Arizona and Texas to convert energry?

From the sun to power up businesses and peoples homes?

Henry Dover answers:

Solar panels are used in international level , not only in Arizona or Texas but most of the American states using solar panels in their different locations.. Like roof, garden, terrace. I bought a solar panel at North Carolina house….

George asks…

How much energy does an energy-efficient home use?

Ideally, if one were to consider energy efficiency from the building process and utilized technologies such as compressed earth blocks, a geothermal heat transfer system, energy efficient windows and solar screens, in addition to energy efficient appliances and electronics throughout the home, approximately how much energy would such a home consume if you assume typical appliance/electronic usage? Assume a 2000~2400 square foot home in Texas. The idea would be to use solar panels to power the home. What about if you include powering an electric car into this demand (something like the upcoming Tesla Model S)?

Henry Dover answers:

It depends on the size of the house and many other variables.
