George asks…

how much solar power do i need to power a house?

on average and how much would it cost if i installed it myself

Henry Dover answers:

A typical US home will need a 3KW system, if the home is connected to the grid you can install a smaller system that will offset only part of your consumption. For DIY (buy the kit and install it yourself) you may assume $5 per watt ($15,000 for a 3 KW system), but you can claim 30% as a federal tax credit and depending on where you live, many states grant tax credits or other incentives

Charles asks…

how much does solar energy cost in BC?

im doing a research paper about solar energy, concentrating on BC mainly.
how much does it cost to install solar energy for a family?
please include: material, installation, power supply etc..
if you can show the resources that you used that would be awesome!

Henry Dover answers:

Prices vary! :o

Also, different families require a different amount of solar energy. So, the cost will change depending on who is using this solar energy.

Carol asks…

How much of a tax rebate can I get from installing solar?

I love the idea of adding solar power to my house, but am wondering if the tax benefits (and savings, of course) justify the cost.

Henry Dover answers:

The DSIRE website lists all federal, state, utility, regional, etc incentives available. Http://www.dsireusa.org/. The feds offer a 30% tax credit, but depending on where you live, you may get more.

This site does a good job figuring out the size of the system, the rebates, and the payback. Http://www.altestore.com/howto/Tools-Calculators-Reference/Solar-Payback-Incentive-Calculator/a65/.

Also consider solar water heating, it qualifies for the rebates, and has a much better bang for the buck than solar electric.

Mark asks…

how much would it cost to reduce the carbon footprint of your house?

if i were to install solar power? and a wind turpine, fully insulate my walls and ceiling, double glazing etc? how much would it cost and would there be any monetary benefits?

Henry Dover answers:

That has a lot of variables certainly though you would expect compensation in the form of savings from your insulating and glazing much sooner than the exorbitant costs of solar and wind.

Each house or location has to be evaluated as to expected energy consumption, Amount of solar or wind energy expected.
Sites like I source can give you an idea of the proccess needed.

Lisa asks…

Solar Power Cost?

how Much does Solar Power Cost? how much does it cost a month? how much does it cost to install it? How much Will it save me versus electricity? dont have to answer all of them? just at least answer 1 for me! thank you

Henry Dover answers:

This is a very subjective question that varys with individual needs and locations.

Initially solar power is more expensive to setup. But, it pays for itself over time. Also you may be eligible for state & federal gov grants & tax credits.

As for each month, it’s entirely possible depending on where you live & your energy needs you could be “off the grid”. You even could be sending energy to your local power company & getting $ for it.

The 1st link will help you know all the variables. The 2nd link has a sheet to help you calculate your variables.
