Well, that’s quite a heading isnt it!

According to USAToday, the Obama administration has given preliminary approval for a $1.4 billion in federal loan to build what it claims will be the world’s largest solar power complex. Where will it be placed? None other than the Mojave Desert in California.

The project will be to oversee the construction of three solar-energy plants that will be capable of powering 140,000 homes. This will surely double the total amount of solar power generated in the United States.

Thousands of mirrors, known as “heliostats”, will be used. they will track the sun in two dimensions thereby capturing more solar energy than previous more traditional solar technologies.

The first plant is expected to begin commercial operation in 2012, the second one in mid-2013 and the third, in 2013.

Good news indeed!
