Wherever you happen to be in the world on March 28th at 8:30 p.m., you’re likely to be in or near a city or community that is switching off its lights for Earth Hour. Make no mistake – Earth Hour 2009 is set to see people all around the planet switch off their power supply in support of action against the climate crisis.

With less than six weeks to go, more than 500 cities all over the world have officially agreed to switch off in support of this massive global action on climate change.

For Earth Hour 2009, you will see some of the most famous landmarks on Earth switch off their lights in support of positive action on global warming. Iconic buildings participating will include:

-    The world’s tallest hotel building – the Burj Dubai
-    The tallest free standing structure in the Americas – the CN Tower in Toronto
-    Moscow’s Federation Tower
-    The Quirinale in Rome – the Italian President’s official residence

Participating in the southern hemisphere among others will be:

–    The southern hemisphere’s tallest tower, Auckland’s Sky Tower
–    The iconic sails of the Sydney Opera House in Australia
–    South Africa’s flood lit Table Mountain.

Already 377 cities, (more than twice as many countries as participated in 2008) have officially agreed to participate. Hundreds of other cities are expected to sign up to switch off in the next few weeks,

Earth Hour 2009 will act as a beacon for a global mandate for action on climate change. It will be a beacon of previously unimaginable size and scale.

Cities committed for Earth Hour include Moscow, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rome, Manila, Oslo, Cape Town, Warsaw, Lisbon, Singapore, Istanbul, Mexico City, Toronto, Dubai and Copenhagen, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Nashville, New York, San Francisco, St. Louis and the Village of Homer Glen, Illinois.

Houston and Seattle are also possibly going to join in and the authorities in Washington, DC. are taking a good look at it.

Paris and 27 other French cities will take part in Earth Hour. The lights will be switched off on The Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. Indeed, so far, there is a total of 405 cities in 74 countries all of which have officially agreed to take part.

In Las Vegas, The Strip will switch off its lights for the whole hour. This will be the only time the Vegas lights have ever gone off, except for a short while in 1998 in honor of the passing of one of the city’s favorite sons, Frank Sinatra.

… And yes! The city of tiny lights, Los Angeles, will go dark with all the rest!

Nobel Peace Prize Winner, the Archbishop Desmond Tutu pledged his support with the wise and worthy words, “Climate change is the greatest human induced crisis facing the world today. It is totally indiscriminate of race, culture and religion. It affects every human being on the planet. Earth Hour is an opportunity for every man, woman and child from all corners of the globe to come together with a united voice and make a loud and powerful statement on the issue of climate change.”

So don’t forget to mark your calendar. Earth Hour will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30pm. Just 35 days to go!

Turn out. Take action!
