One of the most frequently touched upon news subjects recently has been the extent to which solar power for homes has been growing.

There has been much talk of the U.S. Stimulus Bill, also know as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act . It is claimed that this will introduce billions of U.S. dollars into sustainable, renewable energy projects.

Then, last month, media attention diverted to the Solar Generation Report, introduced by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) in conjunction with Greenpeace.

So things are looking good for the solar power for homes industry. With a solid infrastructure that incorporates solar power for homes, the future looks a lot rosier.

Only last month (January 2009) at a conference in Spain the President of the EPIA gave us an extremely optimistic prediction when he said,  “Solar photovoltaic electricity has the potential to supply energy to over 4 billion people by 2030 if adequate policy measures are put in place today.”

Of this mass of people who would benefit from solar power for homes in the next 20 years, it is most likely that the vast majority will be living in remote areas that are not easily able to be connected to their national electrical grids.  These people’s lives would be radically improved. We can now start to look forward to a future where everyone can enjoy quality medical care, healthy food supplies and clean water.

Even with this huge growth in usage, we would still only be talking of less than 15% of the world’s total electrical demand. So, it is clear that the overall potential growth of solar power for homes is vast, and its resultant impact almost unquantifiable.

Scientists can foresee that a reduction in demand of fossil fuels at this level would mean a reduction of 1.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide that would no longer be released into the atmosphere. That is the equivalent of 450 coal-fired power plants!  How cool is THAT?

The growth of the solar power industry as a whole would certainly improve the environment, but don’t forget how it would also radically improve our own social lifestyles.  More solar power for homes means more jobs for people in this burgeoning new industry.

Currently the number of green collar jobs in the solar industry is roughly 120,000. It is confidently predicted that the number of jobs connected to solar power for homes will jump by 2 million in the next 10 years. With the predicted growth in solar energy, it is estimated that in twenty years number could increase to over 10 million! That’s right! Nearly ten million new jobs over the next two decades!

There will be a whole range of new jobs created including workers installing solar panels, researchers and developers providing new products, laborers trained up to fit the latest electrical wiring or manufacturing the individualized elements of the solar industry spec. This will be an explosion in employment across the whole economic spectrum within the solar power for homes industry.

What will insure this is the plain and basic economics of the proposition. Solar power for homes makes sense. As governments continue to increase regulation restricting greenhouse gas emissions, so traditional fossil fuel based electricity will struggle. If the example of BP is anything to go by, the actual suppliers will probably transition themselves to align with the new reality, so don’t expect the old names of our energy supplier to disappear, but watch how, in the next 5-10 years, solar power for homes will become as affordable as the traditional grid-based electricity.

Given that solar power for homes can be more reliable, less costly to maintain and a great deal more environmentally-friendly, you can bet that solar power for homes is here to stay!
