Everybody’s talking about them, but whats the history and where can you find one of these solar power grants I keep hearing about?

The planet is in the grips of a crisis right now. Along with increased levels of pollution around the globe, there is a depletion of all the non-renewable sources of energy that nature has provided us with. These include coal, oil, petroleum, natural gas etc.

This near exhaustion of natural reserves is primarily due to an increase not only in population, but also an easy availability of machines and gadgets which have only gotten cheaper with time. A simple example of this is the rise in the number of cars which has led to a higher demand of gas.

In such a situation where the non-renewable energy sources are being threatened to the point of crisis and where the planet is suffocating under all the pollution, every little counts and this translates into every single individual doing his or her bit for the environment.

One way of doing this is by using clean energy i.e. energy derived from renewable, non-polluting sources of energy such as solar energy, wind energy and water energy. Of these, solar energy has been widely used at all levels of functioning right from a pocket calculator to a solar power system providing energy to a family unit.

Solar power systems that are installed in homes or office buildings are readily available everywhere. However, the only drawback is that they are on the more expensive side as the technology is relatively new and still being developed as we speak.

So how does somebody who wants to contribute to a cleaner and well preserved environment afford a solar power system?

The answer lies with the government which is there to support any well meaning, environmentally aware and conscious citizens. While not many may be aware of this, the government does offer several solar power grants for those people looking to fit their homes or workplace with solar power systems. These solar power grants are more in the nature of incentives offered by federal, state and local governments.

When planning on applying for solar power grants, the first thing to decide is what kind of solar power system you want to install – heating system or photovoltaic system. Depending on what type of solar power system you get will influence your solar power grant. Once you decide what you are getting, you should determine the total budget and how much it will cost to install the entire system.

Once you’re ready with all the numbers, you should contact your local energy office to check for any solar power grants available at the local city level and then move on to checking with state and federal level solar power grants .

At the federal level, up to 2008, a tax credit of up to $2000 was offered for the installation of a solar power system.
