As it becomes more apparent that our planets natural resources are not limitless, a movement has been growing towards a focus on alternative energy sources. In fact during the most recent presidential election cycle in the U.S., all the candidates made energy a hotly debated topic. With this in mind, let’s review one of these alternatives – solar power systems.
Solar power is arguably one of the cleanest forms of energy that is available thus complying with any current and future pending governmental initiatives as a source of power.
The sun is a renewable resource that will not burn out anytime in the near future. Although scientists predict that it will eventually burn out, it can supply energy for our planet’s population far longer than any natural resource has the ability to do.
Solar power systems have no parts that can fail mechanically thus requiring virtually carefree maintenance. The exception to this would be in the case of large solar farms where panels may be motorized in order to get better exposure to the sunlight.
Well designed solar power systems would include batteries that would allow the user to store surplus energy for times when there may be little or no sunlight. The batteries also serve a useful purpose as a backup system during periods of inclement weather which may knock out power to those connected to the grid.
One of the main objections against solar power systems has been the cost. But because of the huge amount of attention that has been focused on alternative energy sources, these costs are being reduced quickly through advancements in technology and competition.
Once the costs of the initial installation has been experienced by not having the pay your local utility company for electricity, then you can begin realizing annual savings that will be reflected directly in your budget.
There are a number of state and federal rebates available that can make the realization of savings come much quicker than expected. Check with government agencies to see what rebates that you may be able to qualify for.
These are just a few arguments for the viability of solar power systems and they may or may not fit your situation. I would advise that you continue doing more research to find out whether or not a solar power system is viable enough to fit your needs.
As an avid boater and environmentally conscious homeowner, I am constantly seeking ways to become a better steward of the planet’s resources. If you are like me and have an enthusiasm for DIY projects, building a solar power system meets both the goal of alternative energy and the satisfaction of building it.
