Though celebrity news is exciting and is closer in proximity, world news can affect the more important things in their lives such as how and where they live. Celebrity news generally only affects us in a sense of fashion and baby names.

Something that will help your proposal and show credibility is surveying people. If you have time (and the guts!) to walk up to random people at school, work, etc., you should ask them how celebrity vs. world news affects them.
