More good news for the solar power for homes industry. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has announced an ambitious long-term plan to ensure that, by 2020, one-tenth of L.A.’s energy needs will come from solar power.
The mayor aims to have solar power for homes meet one-tenth of L.A. ‘s energy needs by 2020. This will ensure the City of Angels sits at the forefront of the solar power for homes industry.
Making his speech outside a South Los Angeles solar panel manufacturing plant, Villaraigosa said the plan will directly address the issue of global warming by reducing the Department of Water and Power’s (DWP’s) traditional reliance on natural gas and coal.
As a result of these plans, sufficient solar panels will be put in place to generate 1,280 megawatts of solar power for homes through private and public facilities. This is revolutionary. No city in the world has ever suggested setting up a solar power for homes system with such a huge megawatt capacity.
”L.A. has everything it takes to make this [solar plan] work,” said Villaraigosa. “We have the sun in abundance. We have the space. We have the largest municipal utility in the country.
To make this work, 500 megawatts of solar power would come from private-sector generating facilities situated in the Mojave Desert. A further 380 megawatts would come from smaller programs, including one or two solar power for homes projects designed for low-income residents. Another program would allow DWP customers to buy shares in locally-owned solar power plants.
A further measure, being voted on in March 2009, would enable the DWP to set up a rooftop solar panel system that would generate 400 megawatts of by 2014.
This is the latest in a series of renewable energy initiatives touted by the mayor in recent weeks. Others included using redevelopment funds to attract “clean” technology companies and investing city pension dollars in environmentally friendly companies.
If it wasn’t for the great work done by the Pope in installing solar panels on the Vatican roof, Villaraigosa would definitely be the Go Solar Power For Homes official Hero of the Week! His great efforts are not going unnoticed. Well done Mr. Villaraigosa! Go solar power for homes!
