The Problem

We are currently facing an unprecedented global energy crisis. Meanwhile, the wellbeing of our planet is at a critical point. Yet, by introducing new technologies such as solar power for homes, we can overcome these problems. So today, each individual is facing an urgent question. Am I going to be part of the problem, or part of the solution?

Last year, we saw what can happen when the basic economic law of supply and demand gets out of control. Oil, gas and electricity prices spiraled all the way up beyond our imaginings. In some cases energy doubled, tripled, or even more in price. Some have since rocketed down to equally unrealistic levels. You can know that this is going to continue happen. Things are almost certainly going to get worse before they get better.

The Reason

The reason is that the demand for energy is growing while the supply is fast running out. We have got ourselves into a non-sustainable loop and everyone is running to grab hold of whatever they can before it all runs out. Our reliance of fossil fuels has us fully invested in a non-renewable resource that is decreasing by the day.

The whole scenario is made even more absurd by the fact that we are tied to these energy sources even though we know that their bi-products are strangling the planet on which we live. As we continue to use fossil fuels, so there will be an increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Here’s how Wikipedia describes it:

“Human activity since the industrial revolution has increased the atmospheric concentration of various greenhouse gases, leading to increased radiative forcing from CO2, methane, tropospheric ozone, CFCs and nitrous oxide. The atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and methane have increased by 36% and 148% respectively since the beginning of the industrial revolution in the mid-1700s. These levels are considerably higher than at any time during the last 650,000 years, the period for which reliable data has been extracted from ice cores.  From less direct geological evidence it is believed that CO2 values this high were last seen approximately 20 million years ago. Fossil fuel burning has produced approximately three-quarters of the increase in CO2 from human activity over the past 20 years.”

Read that last sentence again, if you will. So long as we continue to rely on fossil fuels, we are actively playing a part in overcooking ourselves, and everything else in our planet.

So what can solar power for homes do for you?

Using solar power for homes reduces our demand for fossil fuels because using solar power for homes will actively decrease your reliance on the national grid. Most of the energy we buy in from the grid comes from either coal, oil, gas or nuclear products.

While some might argue that the nuclear option does not involve any fossil fuel, its reliance on non-renewable radioactive metals and huge amounts of water make it equally as unsustainable over time. That is not taking into account the cost of continuing to manage these plants to avoid radioactive leakages for the next 1,000 years or more.

Using solar power for homes will help on a personal level by reducing or even eliminating your utility bill each month. Imagine, no electricity bill to pay every month!

There are many other tangible benefits. For example, a well designed solar powered home is more valuable on the marketplace. You will be able to sell your house easier for a whole lot more if the new owners know that they too will have no electricity bills to pay.

Yes, but how?

Having discussed some of the benefits of solar power for homes, let’s address the question of “How?” How do we go about getting and using solar power for homes?

Contrary to popular belief, installing solar power for homes does not have to cost lots of money. Many local governments are offering massive solar grants, rebates and tax credits. You could buy the panels wholesale (by the pallet on ebay even!), or you could easily and cheaply build your solar power for homes system yourself. There is a growing number of solar power for homes guides that will walk you step by step through the process, if you want to do it yourself.

The Benefits

Once you are able to harness the sun’s energy, you can do all kinds of things with the resultant clean energy. For example, you could install a solar water heater, or introduce solar powered accent lighting. Heat your swimming pool, introduce under-floor heating, install a sky light or even power the whole house. The world’s your oyster!

Solar power for homes can save a ton of money. By installing solar power for homes you will be playing your part in helping to save the planet. As fossil fuels are used up, renewable sustainable energy is going to play an extremely important in the future. I hope you will join us and become part of the solution rather than part of the problem!

Solar water heating systems are a great first move for someone who wants to get into solar energy. Compared to photovoltaic systems, they are much less expensive, and can cut your CO2 emissions many times more than PV, for each dollar spent. Great site, and great article!
