A lot of people also don’t realize that there are many government programs designed to help promote greener living, usually in the form of a tax credit for buying more efficient appliances, etc. For air conditioners, you may have to jump through a hoop or two, but a credit can generally offset the extra premium of a high-efficiency unit. People should also check with http://www.energystar.gov to see where else they can make a difference and save some cash while doing it!
