How much would it cost for solar electric? How about solar heating?
we have just installed a solar system to heat the water. We have a 200 liter (40 gallon) water tank. The cost was about 7000 euros (10,000 USD) but we will get a 50% refund from the government due to ecology/global warming etc. It is worth checking what state or federal grants are available.
Our system is a vacuum-tube type, but if you live in an area with a lot of sun you can get by with cheaper flat panels.

Thousands…how many depends on how much you want to depend on it. Basically the system will only provide enough power to run devices with small loads, such as light bulbs, small televisions, radios, small fans. If you want to run an electric clothes dryer or oven …forget it. You will need a separate generator, or you might be able to supply your access power to the main grid of the electrical supplier near you. They might then in turn provide most of your electricity for free.
