Seems like every day we are hearing or reading about current or future problems relating to energy. The search for sustainable, renewable sources of energy is gathering pace. Demand coupled with media publicity has made solar power for homes more available to the general public, but looking closer, we find that the cost to install solar power for homes might seem prohibitive.

Introducing solar power for homes creates an environmentally friendly source of electricity that can be used throughout your home. Installing solar power for homes introduces a renewable clean source of energy that you can rely on for as long as the sun shines, well beyond the foreseeable future.   Relative to its benefits, the costs of installing solar power for homes are minimal and prices are reducing all the time.

There are two basic types of solar power for homes – passive solar heating and passive solar energy. With passive solar heating, the sun’s energy directly heats the water, making it ideal for heating your domestic water supply. This warmth from the solar heated water could then be passed around the house in the form of under-floor or radiant heating maybe.

With passive solar energy, the energy from the sun is converted into other forms of energy, typically employing solar panels to convert the sun’s heat into DC electrical energy. Using an inverter to transform that electrical energy into AC, the power becomes usable in the exact same way as traditional electricity might be used.

There is nothing different between the electricity from a solar panel to the energy from traditional energy sources except that solar power is clean and sustainable. Some solar power kits, you can actually plug the kit straight into the wall and have the power run round your house just like that!

The price to install solar power for homes can be both surprising and off-putting.  Even taking into account the government rebates, a homeowner’s initial investment can seem excessive.  There are the installation costs as well as the cost of all the necessary equipment.

More often than not the most expensive part to buy is generally the solar power inverter.  This inverter works by changing the energy collected by your solar panels into usable energy for your home.

While technology in many areas generally is coming down in price, in terms of the technology used, solar power costs remain high. So buying the best inverter for your home is all-important. The worst scenario is that you buy a solar inverter that is not sufficient for your home’s needs, and so you have to end up supplementing your solar power with traditional fossil-fuel-based energy. As traditional energy prices continue to go up and up, the negative impact of getting this decision wrong will impact in larger and larger measure as the years go by.

So, in order to avoid having to supplement your solar power, it pays to select the very best possible generator that your budget will allow. At this point, I can sense your growing concern. You must be thinking “Here we go. The price is going up!” However, I ask you to look at it from another angle.

I’ll be straight with you. There is already going to be a fairly high initial outlay. Then I add to that the suggestion that you get the best your money can afford, so that’s bound to push the price up even higher, right? … but why would I say that?

Keep the big picture in mind. This system over time will reduce or even totally eliminate your electricity bills each and every month. Sit down with all your previous electricity bills and calculate your average energy costs per month. By installing solar power for homes, this cost is completely eliminated.

So let’s say your average electricity bill works out at $200 per month. You’ve had a few quotes and, after all the tax credits and government incentives are taken into account,  the best one sets the overall cost for solar power installation at $20,000. So you now know that you will be paying for your solar power installation for 100 months, just over 8 years.

$20,000 is a lot of money and 8 years is a long time, but consider that the life of your solar power system is likely to be no less than 25 years. We have numerous examples of 30 year old solar panels still working fine. Unfortunately, we can’t vouch for any more than 30 years as solar panels pretty much weren’t invented any earlier than that. Even by conservative estimates, you will be getting free energy for 17 years from your investment.

Don’t forget that installing solar power for homes will not only increase the resale value of your home to a level well beyond that of your solar investment … And because people want to be living in homes with green credentials, your solar power for homes installation will make your house a lot more sellable as a proposition given that you have introduced a solar power for homes energy system that covers all the electricity needs of the property.

Many local government offices offer assistance, grants, and rebates for people who purchase solar systems for their homes.  Reducing the solar cost in this way makes your solar power for homes system even more affordable.  So be sure to look into all the possible state or local government deals before buying your solar power for homes system.

By investing wisely at the outset, choosing to install solar power for homes on your property might well turn out to be the best investment you ever made. With rising fuel costs, increasing power cuts and a worsening global environment, it makes good sense to step through any fears that may be in the way and commit to solar power for homes.

You’ll be reducing your impact on the environment as your carbon footprint becomes negligible. Your monthly expenses on utility bills will evaporate and the value of your property will increase. With solar power for homes, your initial outlay will be paid back to you, often within 10 years, leaving you free to enjoy the benefits of a good decision made well at the right time. You will eliminate your dependence on external power suppliers, establishing yours as an energy-independent property. All that and the upkeep and maintenance costs for solar power for homes systems are minimal.
