This week, Brad Pitt and Steve Bing returned to New Orleans to see some of the displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina move into their new solar power homes, thanks to Brad and Steve’s Make It Right Foundation.
There’s nothing new in seeing Hollywood celebrities showing up to support celebrated causes. However, you’re often left wondering where they went to after their initial photo-shoot is completed. That’s not the case with Brad and Steve, who’ve remained steadfast in their support of the New Orleans community of all-new solar power homes.
The actor and the producer-financier have spent the past year and no less than $5 million each of their own money to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This week they unveiled the first six all-new solar power homes.
Focussing on the residents of New Orleans’ ravaged Lower 9th Ward, a year ago they launched the Make It Right Foundation, enlisting a coterie of world-class architects, including L.A.’s Thom Mayne, to design and build safe, affordable solar power homes for the locals who lost everything to Katrina’s wrath.
Make It Right mean to catalyze the redevelopment of the Lower 9th Ward by building a safe and healthy neighbourhood of solar power homes incorporating modern, high-quality design and construction while preserving the spirit of the community’s culture.
By building 150 houses in this area, the Foundation is creating an affordable, sustainable, green community that will act as a model for building more solar power homes in the future. Ideally, residents who wish to return to the Lower 9th Ward will be able to do so without further financial hardship.
More information on Make It Right and how you too might donate to this worthy cause is available at the Make It Right website.
South Coast Solar, the company that was awarded the contract to provide the solar panels and installation services for the first Make It Right solar power homes, have designed and installed the rooftop solar energy systems for each of these Make It Right solar power homes.
Troy Von Otnott, President of South Coast Solar said, “As lifelong residents of the city, my partners and I are committed to rebuilding New Orleans greener and more energy-efficient than before Hurricane Katrina. The utilization of solar power for these homes will enable these returning homeowners to live in more environmentally responsible solar power homes that use less energy, which for the homeowners will translate into significantly lower energy bills.”
In addition to meeting the qualifications of the RFP, South Coast Solar’s solar power homes meet Make It Right’s objective of utilizing as many local resources as possible.
Pitt and Bing have done more than simply turned up for a photo-shoot in support of these people. They have lent their names, their time and a considerable amount of their money to this New Orleans project. We at Go Solar Power For Homes Dot Com acknowledge them and wish the inhabitants of the new solar power homes all the very best for the future.

My wife and I have been looking into getting solar in our home for the last ten years. We live in Waynesville, NC. at the foothills of the Smokie Mountain National Park. We live atop a mountain and believe that having solar energy would benefit us and others around us. In the winter months, we lose power because of snow or ice storms, and my 88 year old father still lives in his own home and we worry about that. We would like to become self sufficent for ourselves and for the environment. We have been working with a company called Sundance out of Asheville NC. We had the trees surrounding our home removed that would block the suns rays. Most were all large pines that had died and were a threat of falling. We were preparing but now I am disabled and the cost of the solar is out of our reach now. We have saved for some of the cost, but I am writing to find out if there are programs to help with the cost of putting in the solar in our state of North Carolina or any other programs out there. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Dennis Forsythe
